Types of Replacement Windows and Their Benefits

Posted on January 24, 2018

Bettendorf Window Replacement

No matter if your home has been around for awhile and you're looking for an upgrade, or you are looking to refresh your home before putting it up for sale, replacing your home's windows is never a bad idea. Not only can new windows completely change the look of your home, they are also going to reduce the amount of your heating and cooling bills, due to increased energy efficiency. Window technology has greatly increased energy efficiency over the past decade, therefore, if your windows are older, you should consider replacing them.

It can be difficult, however, to determine just what type of window to use in your home. Different windows have different benefits, and, depending on your style preferences, can determine what type of replacement windows you choose for your home.

Double Hung

An incredibly popular window, double hung windows are considered "traditional" windows, with a vertical alignment. The window slides vertically and both window panes tilt inward to allow for easy cleaning. These windows allow for easy air flow, and can be energy efficient if kept in good condition. Single hung windows are almost identical to double hung, but only the bottom half of the window can move or tilt.

Casement and Awning

The casement and awning windows are also very popular styles of window. These windows are quite similar, with the only difference being how the windows open. Casement windows have hinges on the left or right side and will open horizontally, whereas awning windows have hinges on the top of the window, and open vertically. These windows are opened with a crank and can be considered tighter than others, which make them less drafty and more energy efficient. Additionally, they are easier to clean, as the window panes are typically easier to access. They also allow for increased ventilation.

Bay and Bow

Bay and bow windows are two other great choices for Bettendorf homes. They are closely related to each other, with just a few differences. Both bay and bow windows create more space in your home, and allow for increased light and visibility. Bay or bow windows are often included in the front or rear of the home, to allow sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding areas.  They are also extremely energy efficient, as most bay or bow windows do not open to the outside, and can therefore be sealed in from the outside air.

Slider

While sharing some of the same characteristics as a double-hung window, a slider window opens horizontally instead of vertically. They tend to be more energy efficient windows, as they have better insulation. The horizontal opening allows for better ventilation than a double or single hung window, and these windows are ideal for locations with not as much space. Slider windows tilt and swing inward as well, allowing for ease of cleaning.

Garden

Garden windows are a great way to add more light and the appearance of more space to your home. They will also allow you to grow plants all year long, as garden windows are essentially small greenhouses. Having a garden window will not only give your room a more open feeling, it will allow you to grow plants even in cold weather. You can even grow herbs to have fresh ones to use in your cooking! These windows can also open for easy cleaning. Installing a garden window is a great choice for any Bettendorf homeowner.
