How to Estimate Your Vinyl Siding Needs

Posted on October 25, 2018

Vinyl Siding Davenport

New vinyl siding is a great way to spruce up your home's curb appeal. Whether you are planning to sell your house sometime soon, or just want to revamp your home's look, replacing the siding is a great choice to increase the value of your home. However, replacing your home's siding is not a small project. Therefore, it is probably necessary for you to budget for this replacement. It can be difficult to do this, however, if you do not know how much money you potentially are going to spend. By estimating how much vinyl siding you need for your home, you can accurately determine a budget range for the project, and can know about how much money you need to set aside for this project.

Gather Your Tools

The good part about estimating the amount of vinyl siding you need is that you do not need to have advanced mathematical or mechanical skills! You don't even need any special tools outside of a measuring tape and a calculator (unless you want to do the math in your head!)

Determine Your Design

One of the first steps you need to take is to determine what parts of your home's exterior will be covered by vinyl siding. There are many different design features that can be used for the outside of your home. Some parts of your home can be covered in stone, or brick, while others are covered in vinyl. These different coverings of your house can highlight various features and can project a certain aesthetic and curb appeal. Once you figure out if your entire exterior will be covered in vinyl or not, you can then determine what parts of your home you actually need to measure, and which ones you don't.

Take Measurements

Now for the actual practical part of taking the measurements of your home's exterior. Depending on your roof line, you may have a variety of features to take into consideration. You will need to measure the walls, keeping in mind the number of corners you have, as corner pieces are a different type of siding. You then should take measurements of your roof gables soffits and fascia, should those be a part of your home's exterior. Finally, take a measurement of any openings that you may have - windows or door openings, and subtract that from the total amount you calculated for the walls.

Calculate Cost

This final step to estimating your vinyl siding cost will be to decide just what type of siding you want to install. There are many different varieties, each with their own benefits to consider. Once you have figured out what siding you would like to use, you can then find out its cost. Most siding comes in a cost per square foot. You can take this cost and multiply it by the total number of square footage that you have calculated, and, voila! You have determined how much your vinyl siding project should cost.

Time for a Professional

Of course, keep in mind this is just an estimate.
