How to Ensure Your Health is Protected During a Home Remodel

Posted on April 3, 2020

Quad Cities Home Remodeling

It's no secret that even with the best team at your side, the upheaval that goes into a home remodel can be stressful. However, your remodeling project shouldn't take a significant toll on your health. If the stress is becoming too much or the remodeling site is not safe for you, you'll need to take steps to protect yourself. Your remodeling professionals should have precautions of their own to take, such as insuring their team and making the job as little stressful for you as possible. That said, here are some steps you can take to ensure your health is protected:

Separate Your Living Space from the Remodeling

There's no way around it: remodeling is messy. Not only is it nosy and disruptive, but often the space being remodeled can involve dust and debris that no homeowner should be breathing in. Thus it's a good idea to separate your living space from the area being remodeled. If you're having home exteriors remodeled, this is easily done. However, you may still want to stick to the parts of the house that are the farthest from the work so as to have some peace of mind and surer safety.

Check Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Before the job begins, make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Any job that involves paint strippers can potentially become a hazard when it comes to carbon monoxide poisoning, as paint strippers contain methylene chloride, which the body can change into carbon monoxide when inhaled. Again, keep in mind that your remodeling team is full of pros and they know what they're doing. There's no reason to panic, but you still want to be secure knowing that if carbon monoxide is in the air, you can be warned.

Ask About Your Remodeling Team's COVID-19 Precautions

The COVID-19 pandemic has people all across the world concerned about their health, especially when coming in contact with others. Many businesses that are considered essential businesses are taking precautions both to protect their employees and to protect their customers. This may mean rescheduling a remodel, or it may mean that they adhere to certain CDC guidelines by wearing protective gear and disinfecting tools. Ask your contractor whether they'll still be able to do the job in the midst of the pandemic and what precautions they plan to take if so.
