Entry Doors: Using Design Options to Make a Statement

Posted on April 12, 2019

Quad Cities Entry Door Replacement

Most homeowners realize how important curb appeal is to your home - not only does it directly impact the value of your home itself, it is the first impression all visitors get who come spend time with you. We all know how important those first impressions are, therefore, it is necessary that your home's exterior is kept up-to-date and matches your overall home's design aesthetic. There is nothing more jarring then having the interior of your home be completely at odds with its exterior. Not only should the two designs match, they should also be indicative of your personal preferences, giving an impression of who you and your family are.

One portion of the home's exterior that often gets overlooked is the entry door. Although not the largest part of the home, it is just as important and can easily draw the eye and become the focal point of any external design theme. Having an entry door with the right style is imperative to creating the perfect first impression. There are a few different design options you can choose to ensure your door is making the right statement.

First and foremost, the material your door is made out of will set the tone for every other design choice you will make. Most entry doors are made out of one of two materials: wood or steel, although fiberglass has entered the market as of late. Each material has its benefits and some detriments. For example, wood gives the most variety of design  and portrays a certain aesthetic, but it can cost a bit more than other materials. Fiberglass is extremely energy efficient and is versatile in design choices, but is more expensive than a steel alternative. There is a door material for every budget, however, so the material you choose is up to you!

The color of your door is another way you can make your mark on your exterior design choice. If you have a wooden door, some homeowners choose to keep the natural color. Others choose to paint their steel or fiberglass door, either as a complementary color to the trim and siding of their home, or as an accent color. An accent color makes your home's entry door stand out, drawing attention to it as a design focus, as well as the point of entry. Choice of color is a great way to incorporate your design preferences into your home's exterior.

Finally, accents for your entry door are a great way to individualize it. Accents range from simple hardware choices - like the type of hinges or door handle and lock you want - to more complex choices, like adding windows. The inclusion of glass around your entry door, whether you choose to add a transom, side lights, or decorative glass on the door itself, are all ways to add your own flair. Entry doors have been trending to a more modern look, and including more glass in the door, therefore allowing more light into your home, is always a great choice.
