4 Steps to a Summer Ready Home

Bettendorf Window Replacement

Sunny, warm weather is here at last...but is your home ready?

We all look forward to summer: the longer days, the sunny weather, a chance to go swimming or enjoy all of those favorite outdoor activities. But before you break out your swimsuit, take a look at your home. Is there anything that needs to be improved in order to prepare your house for summer? That hot, sunny weather can take its toll on the exterior of your home if it's not in good shape to begin with. Here are a few steps to ensure your home is summer ready.

Take a Look At Your Roof

Illinois winters can be rough, as can those rainy spring days. Now that fair weather is approaching, take a look at your roof. Do you notice any missing or curled shingles? Any dark, discolored spots? Any algae or moss starting to grow in between shingles or around the corners? You'll also want to make sure any flashing is tamped down and not beginning to come loose. Summer has its fair share of rain showers, as well, so you'll want to avoid roof rot or leaks as much as possible. This is also a good time to clear your gutters of any debris they may have accumulated in the winter and spring.

Check Your Siding

Take a look at your siding, as well. In the summer, hot temperatures cause the home to breathe, expanding with the change of weather. Siding that's in good condition will breathe with the house, while poor siding may start to pull away or warp. You also want to take a look at the color of your siding, making sure it's not too faded, as the longer exposure to sunlight will only exacerbate this problem.

Clean Your Windows

Sunny weather means sunlight streaming through your windows, lighting your home and even helping you save on your electricity bills. Of course, that's provided your windows aren't dirty and grimy when the summer begins. If you didn't do it over the spring, now is a good time to wash your windows with a gentle soap and a cloth. Try to do this on a cloudier day to avoid streaks that can occur when the windows dry too quickly in the heat of summer. With clean windows, you'll be able to enjoy the summer even from indoors.

Home Interior Maintenance

Mainstream Home Improvements can help you with things like windows, roofing, gutters, and other home exteriors. However, there are a few things for the interior of your home that you won't want to overlook. Make sure you replace your air filters for the new season so they don't become too clogged. You may also have preventative maintenance done on your HVAC system around this time to make sure it can hold up to whatever summer throws its way. Give your bathroom a good scrub, keeping it free of mold and mildew, and cleaning your shower head as well. You'll probably need a clean shower more than ever with the hot, sticky weather coming and more time being spent outside.
